Our mission is to always keep you informed – on both internal and external factors that may affect the countertop industry.

Chinese Quartz has been sold under market value for quite some time. Recently, Cambria filed petitions with U.S. DOC and U.S. ITC against Chinese Quartz.

Because of this, two preliminary tariffs will be announced in September. This will impact the countertop industry immensely because 50% of quartz slabs are imported from China.

HERE ARE 8 FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE TARIFF SCENARIO.

1. "DUMPING IS A TERM USED IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE"
It's when a country or company exports a product at a price lower than market value in order to gain market share.

2. CHINESE QUARTZ IS BEING "DUMPED"
On May 31, the government determined that Chinese Quartz is being "dumped" into the U.S. market.

3. THE INITIAL TARIFF
The initial tariff percentage will likely be determined between September and November 2018, ranging from 10 to 300% based on the U.S. Trade Commission. The final tariff percentage will be assessed mid-2019.

4. WHO IS AFFECTED BY THE TARIFF?
The current petition/tariff will only affect quartz products from China. No European-made products will be affected.

5. IS CUT-TO-SIZE ALSO AFFECTED?
The tariff will be applied to quartz slabs and cut-to-size pieces manufactured in China.

6. ABOUT CHINESE SUPPLY CHAIN
It's likely the petition and the "fear of the unknown" will disrupt the current Chinese Quartz supply chain, resulting in delivery issues for customers.

7. WHO ARE THE CHINESE QUARTZ IMPORTERS?
There are over 500 companies importing Chinese Quartz int the U.S. market including LG, Caesarstone, Dupont, MSI, Dal Tile and Bedrosians.

8. THESE IMPORTERS HAVE STOPPED ORDERING
Many of these importers have stopped ordering products from China and diverting orders to other factors throughout the world. This is likely to affect their inventories and supply chain.
