Choosing kitchen countertops can be tricky — especially if you don’t know what to expect as far as cost, maintenance and durability. The goal is striking a harmonious balance between design and function. So, where do you start?

First, you’ll need to learn (or re-establish) your interior design style.

Here are some examples to choose from below that will direct you to the next step.

None of these tickling your fancy? Browse those in-between styles here.

Once you’ve determined your design style, we’ll need to ask a few quick questions.

What atmosphere do you have in mind? (i.e. formal, family-friendly, sleek, etc.)

What’s the most important characteristic of material for you? (i.e. looks, durability, low cost, uniqueness, etc.)

What’s the best way to describe your budget?

What’s your commitment level to maintenance?

Think of your dream countertop. What worries you most? (i.e. water damage, scratches, stains, etc.)

Finished? Let’s see what countertop would best suit your style and needs.

1. Granite

Atmosphere: Tasteful, timeless and elegant

Maintenance: Heat and scratch resistant, but requires sealing once a year.

Looking for a truly classic material? Granite countertops come in a variety of colors and veining options and look great in almost any kitchen. If you’re on the fence between traditional and modern styles, some granites are uniform in color and have minimal swirls and specks.

Granite does need to be sealed regularly to prevent staining, though. So, give our professionals a call and we’ll walk you through its maintenance in more detail.

2. Quartz

Atmosphere: Colorful, contemporary and family-friendly

Maintenance: Heat and scratch resistant, non-porous and requires no sealing. Quartz isn’t UV stable, though, so it cannot be used in outdoor kitchens.

Looking for a material on the rise? Quartz is formed by pressing natural quartz with polymer resin, resulting in a range of colors and patterns. One of the benefits off quartz is its durability. And though no sealing is required, we still recommend protecting your counters from hot pots and pans.

3. Dekton

Atmosphere: Urban, sleek and modern

Maintenance: Flame retardant and requires low maintenance.

Looking for something upscale with clean lines? Dekton is perfect for modern, contemporary and industrial styles — striking the perfect balance between looks and durability. It’s also a fantastic choice for those who cook often as it’s flame retardant and requires little to no maintenance.

4. Marble

Atmosphere: Luxurious, striking and affluent

Maintenance: Very porous and scratches easy, but heat resistant.

Looking for a style that exudes grace? Loved by pastry chefs, royalty and designers around the world, the intricate patterns found in marble instantly dress up a kitchen. Though it’s a timeless material, homeowners should be aware that it scratches easily — taking on character as time passes
