# Measure your countertops in five easy steps

Are you ready to replace your countertops with something new? Before visiting a showroom, it is best to know the square footage of your countertops to receive the most accurate cost estimation.

Step 1:

Provide a sketch of the area. Don’t worry you need not be an artist. Simple rectangles and squares provided a good idea of what the space looks like is sufficient. Include sinks and appliances in the diagram. This outline will give contractors a resource to determine the amount of work needed to complete the renovation.

Step 2:

Examine the edges and sweeps. Note anywhere there is a rounded overhang. This will further help a contractor understand the outline.

Step 3:

Next, divide the countertops into easy to measure sections. For example, if the counter turns into an L-shape, divide it into two sections. One section should be the horizontal section, and the other section is vertical

Step 4:

Use a measuring tape to get the length of all sides. Use inches and round the measurement to the nearest ⅛ of an inch. Do not measure when you reach the sink or appliance. Document the appropriate measurements on your sketch of the space.

Step 5:

Calculate the square footage. Multiple the length by the width of each section, and then add them together to get the area in inches. Divide the area in inches by 144 to get the square footage.

For example, if you have an L-shaped countertop and the length of the vertical is 60 inches, and the width is 30 inches, then the area of the vertical is 1,800 inches. Divide the inches by 144, which is the number of inches in a square foot.  So the counter is 12.5 square feet. If the horizontal section is 30 inches by 20 inches, then the area of that section is 600 inches and the 4.17 square feet. So, the square footage of the countertop would be 16.7 square feet.

Bonus tip: You can use the same strategy and calculation method to determine the square footage of materials needed for a new backsplash.

Bring your measurements to River’s Edge Countertops, and we can help you find the perfect new countertops for a great price. Contact us if you have any further measurement questions.

# What Stone Countertop Are You?

Choosing kitchen countertops can be tricky — especially if you don’t know what to expect as far as cost, maintenance and durability. The goal is striking a harmonious balance between design and function. So, where do you start? Here are some examples to choose from below that will direct you to the next step.

# 6 Ways to Incorporate Natural Stone in Your Home

Natural stone simply exudes luxury. Materials like marble, granite and quartz transport us back to a time of imperial families, castles and classical architecture. Natural stone has the ability to not only transform the look of your home but improve its value in the real estate market. Additionally, the material is a perfect way to add a custom touch of originality to your space.

With so many colors and patterns to choose from, the possibilities are endless. That being said, natural stone isn’t limited to the bathroom and kitchen. There are many ways to incorporate it. Keep reading to learn six new ways to incorporate natural stone in your home.

Whether it be marble, granite or quartz, the material you choose heavily depends on the application you’re planning for. For example, natural stone is commonly used for countertops, vanities, sinks, showers, islands walls, floors and entryways. Each encounters a great deal of foot traffic or use. So, you’ll need to choose a material that’s resistant to staining and scratches.

Something else to keep in mind is that more delicate stones will require more protection or maintenance. So if the area sees little traffic, it may be best to incorporate it there. On the other end of the spectrum, if you’re wanting to incorporate natural stone as soon as you pass through the front door, you might opt for a darker, simplistic design that’s a bit more durable.

# Victoria Stone Fair in Brazil

As you may know, we’re constantly searching far and wide for the most unique, cutting edge products we can find. Just like our clients, no one design is the same and there’s nothing we love more than stumbling upon a goldmine of ornamental stones! We had the wonderful opportunity to travel to the region of Esp’irito Santo, Brazil and attend the Victoria Stone Fair. It’s one of the largest global events showing more than 1,000 varieties of stone!

Brazil stands out for being the country with the greatest diversity of ornamental stones in the world. Ornamental stones are widely known for having a long life cycle, especially in environments with a large circulation of people (which is great news for you entertainers out there). Brazil produces a variety of exotic stones in vast qualities, differing from traditional granites.

The use of these materials has become a strong trend in recent years for the United States and Canada, and it’s easy to see why. They’re natural and sophisticated and have the utmost resistance even in surface intense circumstances.

We came back from our trip with new materials, new experiences, and new ideas to present to our clients. Curious as to what caught our special attention in Brazil? Give us a call at (405) 387-2930, we’d love to share some of our favorites with you and get your project underway!

# Beating the Status Quo!

"I've found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more often." These are words from a wise man who has not only spoken many great words but has lived them out...and has helped others do the same. That man's name is Brian Tracy, and when it comes to breaking down the secrets of business and life into simple truths, there is no one better”.  Well, about 8 months ago I was given the opportunity to co-author with Brian along with the most innovative and successful business leaders and experts in the world to join him in this book. He did NOT want the status quo...he wanted experts who took chances...experts who pushed the envelope...professionals that didn't follow the crowd...Brian Tracy wanted a group of leaders who BEAT THE CURVE!

That is exactly what we did! Over the last 8 months leading professionals and entrepreneurs were chosen in various niches and professions who exemplify a trailblazer mentality and didn't let the world's lure of comfort keep them from taking chances and having HUGE Success.  We were all held to one standard, we had to be willing to share openly, no holding back, the most valuable secrets we had in our tool box. As you can imagine putting that sort of thing in writing for the world to see is a bit intimidating....but I'm excited to tell you that every single one of them agreed! And now I am able to proudly present your next "must have" book that will elevate your life and business to the next level.
